to Host a Piano Masterclass on Practice Techniques for New Works
To cultivate and enhance students' professional skills, the College of Music at Yangzhou University held the second session of the 2024 Undergraduate Teaching Festival Lecture Series on the afternoon of November 19, 2024. The event, titled "Piano Masterclass – Practice Techniques for Learning a New Piece of Music," took place in the Lecture Hall of the Yifu Building on the Hehuachi Campus.
Specially invited to this event was the renowned American pianist, Professor Robert Satterlee. In attendance were Professor Shao Ping, Dean of the School of Music, Associate Dean Yao Ting, Director of the Piano Teaching and Research Office, Fu Long, and all faculty members of the Piano Department, as well as all first- and second-year students and piano majors of the School of Music.

The lecture consisted of two parts. The first part was a presentation by Professor Robert Satterlee, who shared his insights while performing Mozart's Sonata K.332. As he played, he guided the audience through an in-depth appreciation of the piece.
The second part was a masterclass session. Four undergraduates—Yu Jiayong, Tang Yichen, Zhang Xinyue, and Zhang Xinyun—were selected to perform four piano works: Étude Op. 25 No. 12 by Chopin, Paganini Étude S.141 No. 6 by Liszt, Toccata from Prokofiev, and Étude Op. 10 No. 8 by Chopin. Professor Satterlee provided guidance on various aspects, including finger positioning, dynamic control, emotional expression, tone clarity, and interpretation of the pieces.

The masterclass by American pianist Professor Robert Satterlee concluded successfully, leaving students with a wealth of knowledge and admiration. This piano masterclass not only fostered artistic exchange and collaboration across regions but also provided an in-depth understanding of the performance essentials of piano works and the musical concepts behind them. It offered artistic guidance to the students, inspiring their musical potential and enhancing their musical literacy, while also further improving the quality of piano education and teaching at our school.
